China Surpass US in Carbon Dioxide Emissions

China Surpass US in Carbon Dioxide EmissionsJune 13, 2025 - Data of carbon dioxide emissions for year 2024 has now been released and shows that China surpassed US for the first time ever. China increased their carbon dioxide emissions to 7,981 million metric tons and US emitted 7,888 metric tons.

China has increased their emissions by 157% during the last 25 years, basically because of their continuously growing economy and the increasing power demand. The worldwide carbon dioxide emissions have increased by 62% during that same period, while the population of the world has only increase by 30%.

Per capita, US is still the country emitting most per person, 22.53 metric tons per year, more than four times as much as China with 5.54 metric tons per person and year.

Argument: According to the International Energy Outlook 2005 by US Energy Information Administration, China will surpass US in carbon dioxide emissions by 2024. The figures of population are based on the World Population Prospects - The 2004 Revision from United Nations.
