Search The Future

Here are thoughts about the future from one of the participants of the Street-Level Youth Media’s Summer Arts Apprenticeship Program, "Technology and the Future":

Portable Video Games a Big Problem

July 18, 2037 - Chicago, Il.

The PSP, Ds Lite, Gameboy-2037 is a favorite portable video game that is now in the news for being a big problem. A 13-year-old boy from Chicago is in a youth home after starting a fight with another youth. The boy is addicted to video games. This is not surprising with more and more evidence on video game addiction. As far back as 2007, doctor web sites like Web MD were talking about gamers’ addiction, and how they compare for drugs:  “Unlike with substance abuse, the biological aspect of video game addiction is uncertain. ‘Research suggests gambling elevates dopamine,’ Young says, and gaming is in the same category. But there’s more to addiction than brain chemistry. “Even with alcohol, it’s not just physical. There’s a psychological component to the addiction, knowing ‘I can escape or feel good about my life.’”

The boy is one of many who are more violent because he plays video games many hours a day. This is the 8th year he plays video games for hours, and he is more aggressive because of this. The combination of being aggressive from games and addiction becomes as more and more frightening problem. The Chicago youth is in a home tonight because of it.

Comments:

This isnt what the future will be like if people can control there demons whatever they might be.

If video games cause such violent behavior, why aren’t the millions of people who play these majorly successful war games like “Halo” and “Call of Duty” out killing everybody? If somebody can't tell the difference between what is acceptable in the game world and the real world, that person doesn’t need to be playing games (Especially violent ones) in the first place. Self-control is the key here, and just because one nut job does something harmful, he or she ruins this form of entertainment for the millions of us who are just enjoying ourselves.
