More Manufacturers Join the New Battery Standard

The development of rechargeable batteries took off with the mobile devices 30 years ago. A common problem was the short time that you could use your portable computer before recharging. People have talked about fuel cells to run your home equipment but tests that were made didn't show an interest from the market to constantly refill the batteries.
When these products hit the market, the only electric cord that you will have at home will eventually be the one to the battery recharger. You will always have one battery in the recharger and whenever one of your devices tells you that they are short, you switch. The size of the battery will be like your credit card but one-third inch thick. A battery will come with every new device you buy, and if you want some extra, they will be about US$ 59 a piece.
You don't have to feel stressed to run out and buy new equipment; there is no risk that they will cut the electricity to your house, and if you are a cord freak you will find plenty of devices on the market for a long time.
Argument: The demand for development of rechargeable batteries for mobile devices has increased over the last years and will continue to drive it further, probably to the point that they even become efficient enough for home products.
Questions: Will it be possible to save energy in the manufacturing to produce rechargeable batteries even for home products? Will people prefer to have their equipment run on fuel cell batteries that need to be refilled?

Comments:
It sounds good to me. More energy saving and you know us nowadays always on the computer and when we're not on it we're wasting it by leaving it on.
It does save energy right. =S?

How do rechargeable batteries save energy? They need to be charged from somewhere, whether a public utility or some private source. Further, since no energy transfer can ever be 100% efficient, you will always need to put more electricity into the battery than you can get out. The reality is that running something on a rechargable battery will INCREASE its energy consumption.
Further, each generation of batteries has relied on more exotic (and frequently more toxic) materials, not to mention some of the rather environmentally ugly processes involved in their manufacture. We also have not addressed what to do with rechargeable batteries once they will no longer hold a charge. Most of them go into landfills now and the metals and halogens used in them go into the groundwater.
Let's not pretend that rechargeable batteries are anything more than one more ugly, wasteful but convenient use of our resources.

I agree with you Lamont, that it will not save energy with rechargable batteries. This development will be brought on from a market perspective from battery manufacturers, and will be accepted by customers to get away from the cords. I hope that they have found more environmental friendly solutions to produce the batteries and to take care of them when they are wasted.

Batteries. You guys are killing me. lol.
By this time we won't use kemical batteries to power our electronics and there will be a large decline in TV sales too, due to the more commonly used 3D virtual systems.
Instead of kemical batteries we will use capacitors. Not like the ones today but capcitors based on carbon nonotubes which allows the cells to store just as much or more energy per volymeunit as regular batteries. And the rechargetime is extremly short, seconds sometimes. There used to power everything from electronic devices to cars and weapons, completely replacing the batteries we use today.

persoanlly i use computers a lot whether to watch movies or play DOTA/WOW. but when im not home, my computer is still on downloading things. would still use a lot of energy and more to refill :O

Hmmm, I believe that this poses a sound developement for
the 'rechargeable battery'. This idea is certainly not impossible, and does save energy.
For example, if you are driving your car, it is more fuel efficient if you accellerate, then coast, rather than accellerate full out and then brake more. Well this is the same
for charging up a battery and using it, rather than having a constant stream of electricity from the mains.

(not about batteries in particular)
It is impossible to 'save energy'.
Because it is SO incredibly hard to store electricity. Power stations will generate an certain amount of energy for the population to use, wether they use it or not.
So if you are trying to conserve energy, it will only affect your OWN electricity bill.

I like the idea of a battery running a house so much I'm willing to try it. What is the most efficient battery I can buy right now? I need to be moveable by a hand truck and able to hold a charge with minimal energy input after being charged to full. And it must have an output capable of running a circuit breaker box for a large family's average power usage. Do you have an idea on a battery or battery combination that would be sufficient?

I only asked about a battery system for a gone green venture I'm gonna take. There is plenty of business around my town that sell the products for solar and wind energy but not to many willing to install the equipment in a house. I've got great ideas for harnessing the power and another great idea on how to use it I just need a hand getting my hands on the best way to store the power. At most I would need a government grant to explore my ideas potential free energy with a one time cost only a rich person could afford. But I'll settle for a website where I can purchase the mini generators that could fit in the palm of your hand and a battery package that's strong enough to power appliances galore. If you can point me in right direction so I can get to work it would be greatly appreciated.

Why does the answer always have to be a technological one? Maybe the human race will have embraced a more content less cerebral way of being with themselves. Less need to travel, less need to compute, less need for freezers (the only reason we cannot turn off the big power switch when we leave the house) More time spent growing our own food & cooking and eating communally., more time spent enjoying the challenge of building community, more time being inspired by the vitality of children, more time listening to the stories of the old yet wise.
More time dancing & laughing.
Give me one good, well thought through, non-cynical reason why not!
