How the World will look like in the next 50 years
How can we know what the future will look like?
To be able to understand the future, you must know the past. What has taken us to where we are today and what has changed along the way. The world has changed a lot in the last 150 years, but we humans are driven by the same basic needs as we were 150 years ago, food, sleep, sex, the feeling of being appreciated and loved. Will this change in the next 150 years? No.
What inventions have really made a difference in the last 150 years?
If you take away all gadgets that people in some part of the world are using for entertainment, the inventions that have affected most people around the world for everyday living are the telephone, electricity, radio, television, computer, the car and the ability to communicate through Internet. Then we of course have a lot of inventions that have made life easier, like new medicine, faster transports etc.
In general the inventions for the last 150 years have been a human strive for freedom and communication, to be able to get in control of the time and world. Since there is still much to do in this area, this will be the focus at least for the next 150 years.
But why do we need to predict the future?
Predicting the future is important for two reasons; first we need to start to think about what kind of future we would like for ourselves and to pass on to the next generation, and then we need to know what decisions we need to make today that will give the best result in the future.
Will we ever get those flying cars in the future I saw in pictures as a kid?
Flying cars is an example of a scenario that has been pictured for the future for a long time. It is a great and exciting concept, but is it realistic? To start with we must find out if there’s a basic need for it, what are the pros and cons. Then we have to think about the system we have today, cars going on the ground, and the transition to a new system. To make it work in this example we need two parallel systems, with a road network for the flying cars simultaneousely as the common road network. Even if the flying cars are improved to be suitable for city traffic, the investments would be huge for a city to implement this, as well as for households to get that extra vehicle. So even if all the pros are there the practical steps for such a new route is too hard to overcome, so I’m sorry, there will be no road network for flying cars in the next 50 years.
How about the virtual worlds, do I need to go on vacation in the future or just have all the cells in my body experience an artificial vacation?
It might be possible in the future to experience the sand between your toes, feel the salt from the ocean on your lips, hear the waves and smell the seaweed, just lying in your bed at home. But we will not be able to fool the mind in the way that no matter how real the experience will feel, you will always know that it haven’t happen for real. That will make all the difference. You can tell people today that you have seen the pyramids in Egypt because you have seen a picture of them, but you will never get the feeling of being there. So, even if a great invention is there for an affordable price, it will never replace the common experience if it is not genuine.
Please tell me we will get in contact with some aliens in the near future...
It is most likely that there are other life in the Universe considered there are billion solar systems. In the aspect that our solar system is about 4.6 billion years, other civilisations could be 10 million or even 1 billion years ahead of us. With these numbers in mind there is no greater chance that they will make contact with us within the next 50 years than in 100,000 years, and with the size of the Universe we will not likely be able to make any contact with them during this time.
So what will the future look like then?
What we will see in the next 50 years is the transition from an oil-dependent society, new medicine, the first steps in the development of artificial intelligence, continued exploration of space, more people to die from AIDS, hopefully a better state for the poor people in the world, challenges in the climate change, and new inventions that make life a little easier and entertaining for some.
How should I do then to make the future great?
Well, as you know the winner in life is not the one with the most money when he dies, the winner is the person who sleeps best at night. To feel good about yourself and the people around you, listen to them and show them the love and respect they deserve as fellow human beings and help those in need. That is what will matter when you go to bed at night in 50 years from now, and hopefully will give you a good night’s sleep.

So, no PAV's, holograms, robots, or any of the other cool futuristic stuff?
I have to admit- that future really sucks- but I guess we have to face reality; since peak oil is somewhat iminent- a technological regression would have to occur within the next century.
That really does suck though.

It would be cool if buildings were somehow built in a matter of seconds, not in months or years. And yeah, bubble transport would be awesome, too! Dyl, your idea about cartoon characters in real life form is stellar!! I hope we eventually make contact with extraterrestrial intelligence elsewhere in the universe, cuz that would be so COOL!!!! I agree with most of your points. However, you have failed to account for the possibility of a technological singularity. What is this, you ask? Well, if I drew a graph of paradigm shifts in human history (HOW LONG IT TOOK for the discovery of fire, farming, invention of the wheel, renaissance, industrial revolution, information revolution, etc.), it would exhibit an exponential character on a logarithmic time scale. If you performed a best fit curve to this, it could be gleaned from this chart that at some point in the near future, we will have technology that is capable of self-improvement (aka Artificial Intelligence).
After this point, all bets are off the table, because this means that machines (or more correctly, networks) will become more capable of performing design and improvement of other machines than their human counterparts. This is not a Matrix or Terminator-style bleak outlook, because we simply cannot predict what will happen when we reach this point. Some say all hell will break loose and machines will go nuts. Some say that we will begin to colonize space and become more mature as a species and learn to live better with our planet and its resources and other inhabitants. Others see the comforts brought by such technology quickly turning us toward sloth and gluttony. Some liken it to a spiritual awakening.
The problem with guessing is that everyone always 'said so' once they know they are right. Nobody dares to speak once they are proved wrong through history.
In the 18th century, man was certain that human flight was a dream but Da Vinci was dreaming up an airscrew in the 1500's. People were utterly convinced that bloodletting was the only cure to several diseases until the 19th century , but we have records of plastic surgery in 600BC India.
So what we have is selective memory. As individuals, we remember only certain events and as a society, we tend to forget much more quickly. Technology has caused a change in that (ie. the Information Revolution) in that more information is freely accessible to individuals now that ever before in our recorded history. The next wave will probably come through Nano Technology and miniaturization as stated in your article. Some fear that we are not ready for Nano Technology. My guess is that we will make great strides in Integrated technologies (Nano + Bio + Space + Smart materials.. etc). This will result in
(as a very poor example) a toaster that has Aerospace technologies and grown using Bio technology that has the computing power of a current personal computer and is almost affordable for the geeky. The next step, of course is mass-production and integration into society (How many of you remember the old cellphones?). History has taught us this. We need to stop forgetting so soon.
Sorry my thoughts are not very coherent, but I hope some of my ideas came through in this garbled mess of a reply!

For Tina:
You believe that there are not aliens? how about other humans? what defines the limits of God's creativity? As I see it... IF God exists and his creation is the universe and all that is within it, what makes another solar system different from "the new world" now generally called america. It was thought at the time that it couldn't exist. That largely was due to the limits of technology of the day that allowed people to travel and discover new things. What's the difference between the state of the art sea vessel from hundreds of years ago to new space technologies being created as we speak? Who's to say wether or not in future we can create a new space vessel that will allow the discovery of a planet that supports life and SURPRISE there is a deer there that doesn't exist on earth? Wouldn't surprise me at all. Now other sentient life? That's another matter... IF there is a God.
Posted by: For Tina
Eventually technology will collapse because we realize we can't live with artificial intelligence, it's just bothering us too much. Some people will be wise enough to avoid relying on too much technology and will be the ones who survive when the apocalypse comes.

Man, if God Created all in 7 days, and that was what 28 billion years ago, Im sure he hasnt just been sitting on his ass ever since or before There has gotta be millons of other planets with life on them, Space is a big ass place that we cant even begin to understand, Our entire Solorsystem and everything we know of is just a tiny spec of what is out there, to be more realistic, everything we know including time istelf is the vastness of all space we know of may be nothing more than a spec of microscopic dust in another massive planet in its own space and its own even larger solar system. just like numbers as we know them it never ends. think of it like on MIB when at the end of the movie an alien opens his locker and inthere is our etire galixie and everything we know of including space itself. ... We are nothing more than a blip in time and a tiny phenomenon, we are cancer of this poor planet and untill people realise this our time is limited.
Posted by: TheRite GUY
lol well Jenny I hate to say this but you have about 2 years and one month to make your mark or it will be forgoten in time, dont forget that the Bible, the Prophets of ancient greece, mexico and the meian all state the earth as we know it will be done, OVER time itself will end DEC 23, 2012. so.... get moven. I personaly dont buy it but if it does all end there at least it isnt alone in some hospital room, we can all go down together.
What do you all thing about that 2012 deals, look at all the facts first then answer with an intellegent comment not some crap about "ya gonna end" im just wondering how many actually believe this stuff.? sorry about the spelling 28yrs old but spell like im 14 lol.

personally, i think the lightsaber would be quite simple. all you need, is a high powered energy beam, or laser, a lense, a pipe (PVC tubing, or metal pipe) a conductor, a power source, and a way to activate it (button or switch). (if necessary a reflective rod to keep the laser from going on forever.)

Our planet in this solar system will continue to sustain life for 2 billion years more until the sun runs out of power. Its possible that due to our ignorance we may be extinct from nuclear wars, but its possible that cockroaches and microorganisms will survive and a new "human species" will emerge. On the bright side we might be able to colonize other planets in other solar systems of our galaxy Milky Way.
Posted by: Saul
I dont think there will be life in our solar system, but I do think there are other "EARTHS" out there in the galaxy. With all this terror, killing and gay people GOD is going to terminate this EARTH!! If we all lived by simple rules we would have a much better earth!!
What if there is another earth out there? Scarry!!! we can have our internet connect with theres and be a GWN. Galaxy Wide Network.

It would be brilliant to think that perhaps sometime, over the next 150 years, everybody on the planet would realise that we are one race - the human race. Despite our unique individual differences we would understand that money, religion and war are immaterial to our advancement in this universe. This is what world leaders should be discussing right now. This is my hope for the future, a world in harmony. I do understand however that in the meantime certain more socially advanced countries may have to bomb the s@*t out of others.

In the future, which I have clearly seen, politicians will wear diapers color-coded for party, size, and absorbency. Their constituents will wear color-coordinated outfits as a means of identification. Consummately serious haberdashers and milliners will be exclusive advertisers on Star Trek reruns playing 24/7 on the Star Trek network, the industry having purchased all rights to the series and derivative films on which each character wears a superimposed fedora. Though children will be inclined to laugh uncontrollably, comedy [and the recitation of history] will have been outlawed -- illegalized, except for jokes about constituents, their gullibility, and their ill-fitting hats.
Jay Leno’s birthday will have become an International holiday, replacing Festivus, which will have been outlawed, but for the pole toss, coincidentally the only remaining Olympic Event. The entire planet earth will have become an Internet hot spot and wind power generator, with turbines positioned everywhere, the largest resting atop the Eifel Tower, affectionately called Le fashion spin.
Under Iranian leadership, creativity and invention will have begun to flourish in peace and tranquility under the threat of nuclear holocaust. China, controlling all global debt will have become a huge rest stop and gas station serving oil to anticipated interplanetary travelers bent on seeing the fully refurbished Great Wall. Visitors will have not yet arrived. Though fresh water will be plentiful, abounding with snake heads, mud snails, zebra mussels and Chinese carp, ice will have become a legendary but valued collectors’ item seen by an equally legendary few. Hawaii will have long since become a beautiful reef, popular with lottery winners.
News will consist only of sports, fashion, rap music, Star Trek reruns and hat ads. That’s all I can remember.

The answer to everyones questions is in the ne 30 years things should be hightec because i hooked up with some local scientists and they told me that they are getting more knewledge then the average scientists. What that means is that they are almost done on this huge machine that can withstand going in the past going in the future and slowing time as we speak. What i wnt to do is finish my college and complete everyones dreams and hopes this will be rough but im 100% sure i can do it.I can do the unthinkable all i need is faith and hope my first invention i want to make a huge lab/station/factory.

Stop being too optimistics, 50 yrs will not be enought time for all that to happen.... I am sure those wondrful inventions will come true, time is needed. Look at the predictions of the future made by auothers decades ago... Many said we will have Roberts, flying cars and live on the moon by yr 2000. My point is, in 50 yrs, technologies wontbe that different as today, they'll be some new gadgets... But they won't be that amazing. Flying cars aren't practical if we still have roads and homes on the ground...

An egg cell needs 42 chromosomes to divide and grow into a baby. 21 in the sperm and 21 already in the egg join together at fertilisation to create 21pairs or 42 chromosomes. All the sperm does is transport its chromosomes to the egg cell safely, and trigger mitosis, cell division, growth.
It would be possible to transplant the nucleus, where chromosomes are contained, from an egg cell to a sperm cell, giving its offspring the characteristics of the two mothers, meaning the baby would definitely be a girl.
Scientists think that in the not too distant future, they will be able to bind proteins together to create an artificial, more efficient sperm. It will deliver the nuclei of one woman to the other meaning that they have had a child without any men.
If society continued to evolve but without men, what do you think would happen in the future?
Maybe you think that poverty would be abolished by women where men could not? Would women Stop dressing provocatively to arouse men, and be more stylish? Would all food be fat free and low calorie? Maybe after 1000 years of man's demise, money is no-longer used and women do things out of kindheartedness alone? Maybe there are no more wars and earth is at peace?
Or maybe there is a negative side. Will all of earth be filled with pointless chit chat? Will there be more wars or more poverty driven by greed? What will become of religion when everyone is a lesbian? Will there be religious extremist groups fighting against the women or will they have to edit their rules? What will become of the muslim's sharia law?
What do you think an earth, populated by women would be like, and do you think it's possible? Likewise, what of a world populated by men?

i really think technology will kill us and end us all. we have to live how we all did many years ago by just doing things our selfs and not easy ways that are lazy and easier. we got to start using ourselfs more involved with things. trust me these new tech things are pretty hot but still we cant forget how much us humans can do! we just got to put our mind to it.

heres how the us is gonna be like
Country in depression
Nation in despair
One man seeking reasons everywhere
Growing hate and anger
The leaders orders were precise
Who was to be blamed and pay the price!
Wicked propaganda
Turning neighbors into foes
Soldiers searching homes
And then the former friends are watching
As they are rounded up one by one
Times of prosecutions has begun
Ever since it started
On Crystal night of 2010
When liberty died
And truth was denied
Sent away on train on a one way trip to hell
Enter the gates washington awaits!
When freedom burns
The final solution
Dreams fade away and all hope turns to dust
When millions burn
The curtain has fallen
Lost to the world as they perish in flames
There was a country in depression
There was a nation in despair
One man finding reasons everywhere
Then there was raising hate and anger
The learder orders still apply
Who was to be blamed and send to die!

If humanity reaches the future it will be nothing like it is now. Organic life is on the decline so in the future there will be neither meat eaters or vegetarians but instead our sustenance will be chemical. There will be no ozone layer so we will live in enclosed environments to protect ourselves from cosmic radiation. In the future there will be no more wars because by then humanity will have realized they all have to work together if they are not to become extinct.

The human population will keep growing until one day we will literally run out of space. Omce that happens the whole planet will be trashed and we will have to move to a new planet scientists discover. Your dad doesnt sound so stupid telling you to turn your pc monitor off completly now does he?

The industrial revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the whole Earth. The bigger it grows the more disastrous the results will be. so we can dream on until the end of time! We are all going to be the slaves of a small group of selfish individuals.

Crowding, rapid change and breakdown of communities. But we will not believe the extent of the problems! The modern man will suffer from psychological problems

Earth and it's inhabitants and been and will continue to be shaped by the very same kind of people who comment on this page. some of you guys really disappoint me in who mentally challeged your comments were. the post by Jenny deserves some attention, she seems like she has much potential. I wish there were more 13 year olds out there with such a high drive for science. The guy who wrote the poem on the other hand needs to be completely ignored. the poem is obviously there to serve one purpose, that is to instill fear and paranoia in to the minds of it readers. I personally think that new inventions will come but nothing significant until much later. we are a very young race, with lots of fascinating ideas like partical matter transportation and laser guns. But the truth is we still have to understand the complex nature of the universe. Right now we are noticing thing like blackhole (and their actions) that we cant explain, does it mean that God made it, no, it means we don't understand it yet. We havent grasped the concepts needed for that kind of futuristic improvement. But I definitely think we will, that is if we don't destroy ourselves first. And the belief in aliens is a funny thing. the universe is estimated to have 100's of billions of galaxies with billions of stars in each one and unfortold amounts of planets. Who's is to say that not even just one other (although statistically many more) planet has life on it and perhaps intelligent life. I personally believe that belief is limited by the laws of the universe aka. physics. Believe in God, but if he isn't real it doesnt matter. Believe in a future with space cars. believe in whatever you like just don't believe that it's impossible or else we (as a race) will never advance. And for the guy named Bob, you have some nevre insulting the spelling of a 13 year old. maybe you should buy a book on self-improvement since you obviously have nother better to do than to pick on a girl who has was more forsight and ambition than yourself.

If we have robots doing all the work for us, then I dont think Britain will be the only country taking the number one spot at obessity. We will all be fat! And the world will have rolls because it will also be fat, then all the fat people in the world will weigh the earth down and strike the sun!! Then we're really screwed.
Just have robots to make our coffee and cook healthy meals for us and blah blah blah.
Dont wanna b fat like the peeps on WALL-E floating around on hover chairs
