World Population Reaches Nine Billion

World Population Reaches Nine BillionAugust 15, 2050 - Earlier this morning a new-born girl outside of the city Djambala in the Republic of Congo was born, and became the symbolic nine billionth person in the world. The 23-year-old mother Makemba Ngollo said that she was very happy for the arrival of Titi, as the baby will be called.

Titi is purely a symbolic choice by the UN, since it is impossible to know where the exact nine billionth person is born, since several children are born every second around the world. The choice of a baby from the Republic of Congo coincides with their national holiday today as they celebrate 90 years of independence.

Argument: According to United Nations' World Population Prospects 2004 Revision, the world's population will reach 9.1 billion by 2050, with India as the most populous nation, with a projected decline in fertility to slightly over 2 children per woman in 2050 (from 2.6 children in 2004). Even though the administrative system will be more efficient in the developing parts of the world by then, it will still be difficult to determine the exact number of people in the world.

Questions: What affects on the world will the increase of the world?s population with almost 50% until 2050 have, which of course will be unprecedented in human history in number of people? Are there necessary steps that have to be taken to make sure that we for instance produce enough food for such a huge population?

Comments:

This is very alarming.
With this population am sure poverty and hunger also increases.
Thanks

Overpopulation is pretty much the only problem humans really need to solve these days. Almost every "problem" people are concerned with these days is really just a symptom of the underlying problem, overpopulation. Global warming, shrinking resource base, contaminated food and water supplies? They all come down to 6 billion people living on a planet that seems to have a maximum sustainable capacity of 3 to 4 billion.
Of course, population control is a non-starter for a lot of reasons, all of them political, self-serving and extremely short-sighted.
At one time, the most successful creatures on the planet were anaerobic bacteria that thrived in the primordial toxic soup of methane, ammonia and water vapor. They ruled the planet, in their own single-celled way. They emitted oxygen as a waste product. They became so successful, releasing such a vast quantity of free oxygen as a waste product, that they altered their environment to the degree that they pretty wiped themselves out and set the stage for the next group of dominant life forms, which were able to thrive in the newly oxygen-rich environment.
That sounds like where we are headed. Any efforts to reduce global warming without addressing the underlying problem of too many creatures who emit carbon dioxide as a waste product (in a multitude of ways) is likely going to delay, but not prevent, our eventual demise.

Joey,

Very good video. The hang on the thighs is a nice touch along with the sneer.

1) There is about 134 Million sq Km of Land on the Planet.

2) There should be about 10 people to the sq Km.

3) 134 Million times 10 People = 1340 Million People.

So, there should be about 1.5 Billion people on the planet. That is what we would estimate to be the sustainable population.

What should we do with the excess population?

1) Create a Virus to kill off the excess population.

2) Wage a global war to kill off the excess populuation.

3) Create a creature that kills off the excess population.

4) Send the excess population to other planets.

5) Other options.

Education of women is the key, and delaying marriage. Women who are less educated tend to have more kids.

Fantastic input on the world population as well as nations.
