Millionth Gay Marriage in the US
January 24, 2025 - On Saturday, Jane Wilson and Darla Schwartz will get married in front of their 28 guests at a church in their hometown Stockton, California. Their wedding will however attract some extra attention, since it will be the one-millionth gay marriage in the US.
Same-sex marriages were first allowed in the state of Massachusetts already in 2004, but since the marriages did not get federal recognition, the happy couples were not entitled to the federal benefits. But since the bill passed seven years ago with the federal support of gay marriages, they have the same rights as any other marriage couple.
Currently there are 20 states that recognize same-sex marriages, where about 140,000 wedding certificates were filed last year. Another 12 states allow civil unions, of which some most likely will accept marriages in the near future. The statistics is not that precise to know exactly where the millionth gay marriage will take place so Jane and Darla's wedding is more a symbolic choice based on estimations by gay organizations.
Jane and Darla have been seeing each other for five months and are looking forward to the Saturday wedding to be followed by a couple of weeks off to Hawaii. "It was meant to be a nice little wedding with our closest friends but of course we are happy to be a part of the progress of gay rights", says Darla.
Jane contributed to the gay marriage statistics four years ago in a relationship that ended in a divorce 18 months later. "This time I feel that is so right, Darla is the one I want to share my future with", she says smiling.
Argument: The number one million is based on a federal approval of same-sex marriages with federal benefits by 2018, the gay marriage rate of Massachusetts, and other relevant data.
Questions: What affects will gay marriages in general have on society? Will an approval of gay marriages make way for the gay population in general and in what way?

Comments:
Hi.
To my knowledge there is NO federal support of gay marriages. In fact there is DOMA, the infamous Defense of Marriage Act, signed by, of all people, Bill Clinton. That Act defines marriage as only the union of a man and a woman for federal purposes. That has major consequences on bi-national gay couples, as the foreign spouse/partner is not allowed immigration rigths that a heterosexual spouse would get. Please do correct me if you think that I am wrong.
Best,
Jan

You are correct Jan that there are no federal support in the US today for same-sex marriages. However, the article is based on a federal approval by 2018, which is in line with the current trend (in US and worldwide) of same-sex marriages.

Hi,
I'm from Holland where gay marriages are legal. Believe me, society doesn't change at all because of gay marriages.

Hopefully in the future biases based on religion will decline significantly. It would be a real shame if religion were to continue to dictate other people’s life styles and happiness, people who don’t even have any religious preference. It saddens me to think that humans wouldn’t have matured enough as a society to overcome petty differences. That is a grim future indeed.

While the march towards equality has been seemingly inevitable based on the recent laws/trends in our society, there is still a stigma put on people of different persuasions than the 'Christian hetero' archetype. Gay marriage will do no harm to our society and should be embraced as everyone is a human and deserves the same rights no matter what their personal beliefs are. Having a religion legislate morality for other people is un-american and goes against the very principles this great nation was founded upon. I congratulate all the people who work for equal rights and salute those with the courage to stand up for their convictions.

For the sake of population growth in industrialized nations I hope this will not come true; remember that if people in industrialized nations don't breed, they will be overtaken by much less "tolerant" people from the third world who typically don't approve of gays or any other of "social advances" industrialized nations have made (evolution at its finest).

I personally do not believe in gays or lesbos, and think it should not be allowed. Like Bill Clinton said, marriage is for men and women only. God and Jesus always love us and we can be forgived, but gay is a sin and will still be punished.
