Millionth Gay Marriage in the US
January 24, 2025 - On Saturday, Jane Wilson and Darla Schwartz will get married in front of their 28 guests at a church in their hometown Stockton, California. Their wedding will however attract some extra attention, since it will be the one-millionth gay marriage in the US.
Same-sex marriages were first allowed in the state of Massachusetts already in 2004, but since the marriages did not get federal recognition, the happy couples were not entitled to the federal benefits. But since the bill passed seven years ago with the federal support of gay marriages, they have the same rights as any other marriage couple.
Currently there are 20 states that recognize same-sex marriages, where about 140,000 wedding certificates were filed last year. Another 12 states allow civil unions, of which some most likely will accept marriages in the near future. The statistics is not that precise to know exactly where the millionth gay marriage will take place so Jane and Darla's wedding is more a symbolic choice based on estimations by gay organizations.
Jane and Darla have been seeing each other for five months and are looking forward to the Saturday wedding to be followed by a couple of weeks off to Hawaii. "It was meant to be a nice little wedding with our closest friends but of course we are happy to be a part of the progress of gay rights", says Darla.
Jane contributed to the gay marriage statistics four years ago in a relationship that ended in a divorce 18 months later. "This time I feel that is so right, Darla is the one I want to share my future with", she says smiling.
Argument: The number one million is based on a federal approval of same-sex marriages with federal benefits by 2018, the gay marriage rate of Massachusetts, and other relevant data.
Questions: What affects will gay marriages in general have on society? Will an approval of gay marriages make way for the gay population in general and in what way?

Comments:
Hi.
To my knowledge there is NO federal support of gay marriages. In fact there is DOMA, the infamous Defense of Marriage Act, signed by, of all people, Bill Clinton. That Act defines marriage as only the union of a man and a woman for federal purposes. That has major consequences on bi-national gay couples, as the foreign spouse/partner is not allowed immigration rigths that a heterosexual spouse would get. Please do correct me if you think that I am wrong.
Best,
Jan

You are correct Jan that there are no federal support in the US today for same-sex marriages. However, the article is based on a federal approval by 2018, which is in line with the current trend (in US and worldwide) of same-sex marriages.

Hi,
I'm from Holland where gay marriages are legal. Believe me, society doesn't change at all because of gay marriages.

Hopefully in the future biases based on religion will decline significantly. It would be a real shame if religion were to continue to dictate other people’s life styles and happiness, people who don’t even have any religious preference. It saddens me to think that humans wouldn’t have matured enough as a society to overcome petty differences. That is a grim future indeed.

While the march towards equality has been seemingly inevitable based on the recent laws/trends in our society, there is still a stigma put on people of different persuasions than the 'Christian hetero' archetype. Gay marriage will do no harm to our society and should be embraced as everyone is a human and deserves the same rights no matter what their personal beliefs are. Having a religion legislate morality for other people is un-american and goes against the very principles this great nation was founded upon. I congratulate all the people who work for equal rights and salute those with the courage to stand up for their convictions.

For the sake of population growth in industrialized nations I hope this will not come true; remember that if people in industrialized nations don't breed, they will be overtaken by much less "tolerant" people from the third world who typically don't approve of gays or any other of "social advances" industrialized nations have made (evolution at its finest).

I personally do not believe in gays or lesbos, and think it should not be allowed. Like Bill Clinton said, marriage is for men and women only. God and Jesus always love us and we can be forgived, but gay is a sin and will still be punished.

i do not believe in gay marriage and i think that it is very sick. and maybe those people who are gay could just not get married and become nuns or something. after all, God made adam and eve, not sm and steve.

Serious. The world won't end because we give everybody rights.

Why is that person talking about the world ending in 2012? That's insanity. No one knows when the world will end. Well, maybe one person does

Marriage is much more than a "basket of rights" and it is offensive to hear people define it in those terms. It is a sacred, life-long commitment between a man and a woman for the creation, care, and protection of children and it serves as a model for the relationship between Christ and his Church. There is no such thing as "gay marriage". Trying to create a "marriage" between two people of the same sex is like trying to make a hydrogen atom out of two protons or two electrons. It can't be done, and will never be done. So slap as much cultural and legal makeup on that pig as you want...it is still a pig.

The people who are fighting for the right for same sex marriage are not asking for us to approve of them getting married in any specific church or say that it is sanctified by God or anything. They want the same rights that straight people have when they are married - to be able to go to the court house and have a judge say they both have half of the other's life. Their debt, their benefits, taxes, etc. Furthermore, it is not for us to judge or decide who God will punish. Our relationships, including the one we have with God, belong to us alone. It’s not something for us as individuals to judge or speculate about others... If you’re a Christian, you believe that in the end it's in His hands, so relax. Besides, there are already churches that will marry a same sex couple; it’s just not backed up by the court of law yet.

I personally think each living person has the right to their own choices and whatever that choice may be should not effect what rights they have or have not. Equal rights for everyone. It is now 2009 not 1909 and much has changed in this big world. Being gay is not like a disease and once unleashed everyone will catch it. It is a personal preference and the number of gays will not increase just because they have equal rights. Besides, if everyone would spend a little more time tending to their own lives and not the lives of others the world would be a much better place in the end.

I think gay marriages should be aloud everywhere.. becuase if two people love each other who are they to tell them that they can' be together... I mean if your in love you should be able to be with any one you want no matter gender, race, color, or greed... if YOUR in love you should be left alone and let you be happy...BY not allowin Same Sex marriages then your denyin people the right to happyness and freedom of religion... I mean you can't help how God made you so why should you try to change and not be happy. Be who you are and don't let no one interfer with that.. They can except you as you are.. or juss forget you.. thats my opinion... ='}.. Correct me if you think I'm wrong!
Best of luck!

Well, as is expected when anything intelligent is discussed, there are a few less educated who try to dispute those who are educated. It's about like a guy with a peashooter arguing with a guy holding a 45. No contest.
Only religious bigotry and narrow mindedness is holding back the Federal approval of Homosexual marriages, so, as the older Neanderthals die off, the younger generation will make the laws and rules of society. They already accept gays as a normal part of life.
p.s. Spell check helps if you are educationally challenged. Right click on your mouse and click on "Check Spelling" then change the words underlined in red, OK?

Obviously the only reason gays aren't accepted is because two men going at it is revolting, and once they get married that stomach turning act will be sanctioned by God. But people don't think about how most married people going at it is really gross, especially parents.
I think abortion is a bigger abomination, and that can be stopped if people who want to end the pregnancy can line up adoptions with gay couples. Well, that or condoms, but people keep voting republican so...

Everyone deserves equal rights. I believe that if any two people love each other, then they should be able to marry with full rights, whether they are homosexual or heterosexual.

I agree with Katelyn and girl girl, if you do not believe in gay marriage, abortion, whatever, then don't have one. It really is that simple. Let people lead their own lives, you can not change who they are.
