Icelandic Hydrogen Finally Pushed Gasoline Off the Road
December 8, 2040 - Today was a historic day for Iceland when their President this morning at a symbolic ceremony officially shut down the last gasoline pump in the country. Iceland is a model country when it comes to the fuel transition from gasoline to hydrogen and became today the first country in the world to complete it.
This date has been planned for about 5 years so it came as no surprise to the Icelanders that they can no longer fill their cars with gasoline. The governmental subventions for motorists to scrap their gasoline vehicles, combined with a mature used cars market of hydrogen vehicles due to their early adoption have made the transition possible. Another key factor has been the low price of hydrogen, Iceland has the cheapest hydrogen in the world since their domestic production meets demand.
Iceland is not only self-sufficient with hydrogen, all of it is produced through electrolysis based on hydro- and geothermal power. This means that 100% of the hydrogen consumed in Icelandic cars are produced from renewable sources, known to the consumer as Re-Hydro, compared to about 10% of the hydrogen in the US cars.
The transition has also resulted in that Iceland now has the most modern car fleet in the world. Half of the 233,000 vehicles are hydrogen-hybrids and half are fuel cell models, even though now three of four cars sold are fuel cell.
35 years ago the Icelandic car fleet consumed as much gasoline as the marine fleet, but due to the automotive subventions and the longer life length of boats, the marine fleet has not been able to keep pace. It will most likely take another 10 years before the last Icelandic fishing boat with a diesel engine is taken out of service. By then Iceland will have decreased their oil consumption with about 80% since year 2005.
For sentimental reasons some people had saved their gasoline vehicles to fill them up on the last day, so they can enjoy the smell of gasoline cruising around the island for the last time. The last man at the pump wasn’t there to be sentimental though: “I hope this tank will be enough to get me around to the car dealers today, cause I haven’t bought a hydrogen yet”.
Argument: The development of hydrogen-fueled cars is based on several different sources, with the optimistic scenarios for a fast introduction on the market, to the book The Hype about Hydrogen by Joseph J. Romm. The partly governmental initiative Icelandic New Energy is aiming for a total conversion to hydrogen in the transportation sector in Iceland to year 2050.
Questions: Is there any other country that has a better chance than Iceland to make a full transition away from the car gasoline society? What other positive effects will this have on the Icelandic economy, society and environment?

Comments:
Im not sure, but doesnt hydrogen-fueled cars cause much more global warming because of the H20 they pure into the atmosphere? I think its at least comparible to the gasoline driven cars. And global warming is becoming our biggest threat.

Pesi: No, the exhalation from hydro cars causes no pollution what so ever, the exhaust is pure H2O steam... if the H2 however leaks unused, it causes some pollution.

Global warming isn´t a "threat" at all. But you probably won´t believe it because you've been "programmed" not to.

What about the motorcycles? and tractors and all that other motor stuff?

I totally agree that global warming isn't a threat at all. I'm sick of liberal publications brainwashing people of the world to believe that a natural process such as global warming is a horror. It is an inevitable thing, and there are much more urgent topics than global warming.
On a related note, it is a travesty that Al Gore was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize. He most certainly isn't of the ranks of Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Global Warming is naturally happening now yes, and we can't do much about it, but still we need to be very cautious and change our ways! All the CO2 does warm up the atmosphere! That's why Venus is 900 degrees and Mars has near-earth temps with 1/1000th the atmosphere! Also, many fine particles and soot is causing lung cancers and asthma increase worldwide.

To make hydrogen you need electricity. So unless you have a renewable source of electricity you cant produce hydrogen. Why not use the electricity straight away.

Pesi, how would too much water be bad for the atmosphere, i mean it is so much better to have water instead of CO2. wouldnt you think?

Ok to the person who said Hydrogen emits no pollution, you're right. Technically, the exhaust is actually cleaner than the intake. However, if you do some background researching, you will find that CO2 is less of a global climate threat than H20 water vapor. Water vapor traps in much more heat and sunlight that CO2- its a bigger problem.

Well, I believe that this could be interesting. The fact that Iceland is making this manadatory for the country is neat. They have 100% vs the U.S. 10%. Maybe it's time the U.S. forgets its pride and take a lesson from other countries. I don't think it would be that hard with a little planning, research, promoting the idea, and some confidence this could be the future. Global warming is real so we need to do something about it now or it will be too late. So, I feel that the U.S. really needs to look at what other countries are doing and not care about pride. It's time the U.S. had a rude awakening and a good lesson at the same time.

Haven't the car companies abandoned the idea of hydrogen cars because of storage issues. There is an issue of physics and hydrogen storage. Presently there is not a reliable means to compress hydrogen down to a volume that is manageable and the energy capacity to power a vehicle for any significant distance.

Dear Sir,
We can't just wait till 2040. That is awful long time. We do need to develop alternative fuel supply now. Why do we spend billions of dollars in sports related events and not paying good attention to our energy sources such as sunlight, windpower etc. Why don't we set-up solar collector up in the sky and beam it down via radio frency. This kind of projects should be started before late. If we are to explore universe,. we do need lots of energy and this seems to be the best source. Lets get all our scientists and engineers to strat act on this project.
Thank you

I’d never thought there’s already a hydrogen cars on year 2003 especially in Reykjavik. Using hydrogen cars is very practical and economical.
