VoIP Calls in Most of Europe
March 28, 2020 - Since the introduction of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) in the late 90's and the explosion of VoIP on the market in the beginning of this century, the shift is now completed in Western Europe from TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) to end-to-end fixed VoIP networks.
Virtual providers, who do not own and manage their own networks, that started directly with VoIP pushed the development forward which forced the established players to act quickly. The transition from circuit-switched to packet-switched voice networks has been one of the greatest challenges for the major carriers during the last decades.
Argument: Forrester Research says VoIP deployment in Western Europe will rise from 5 per cent of total end-to-end fixed voice traffic in 2006 to 100 per cent in 2020.
Questions: How will the virtual providers manage when the major carriers have shifted to VoIP? What will the price level for the customer be compared to today, when the current value of the circuit-switched voice traffic is US$ 280 billion a year for the established players?
